Lakota Visiter - Garry Rowland

Caryn and I expect to host Garry Rowland towards the end of the week (04/12) as he travels through the area.  He is director of the Wounded Knee Visitors Center and an activist in the Lakota and Native American movements.  In Saturday's email he wrote

"I'm very interested in doing workshops or presentations so if you could arrange any, soon or later on this Spring, that would be great." 

I've no more details yet, but expect to be chatting with him on Thurs/Fri/Satt hsi week to learn more about what he is looking for. If he can still till SUnday, we will try for a Sunday Afternoon workshop at CedarLight, however that remains iffy at this time.

Anyone else with oppotunties where he may able to address people in this area, please consider extending an inviation (pls email me off list at (will.pierson@verizon.net)  I will keep you individually posted as I learn more of schedule, needs, topics, etc. For a further intro, pls google "Garry Rowland" + "Lakota" as there appear to ne several unassocited hits on his name alone.

Jesse, thanks for the offer. I think if we plan somethig for Sunday, it will make more time to get the word circulated.  I still dont know what kind and source of money we are talking about either, whether he needs a speakers fee, or will visit clg for the opportunity to appeal for donations.  As we did pay a propane bill last winter, maybe we can waive any fee, but I think real serious donations may be in order if he does come to CLG.  I just recieved this from him:

      Tomorrow I'll be going to Boston and I plan on coming towards Baltimore on Thursday and I can probably stay till sunday. I'll be traveling on bus so I can tell them to take me to the down town station. I am a historian in my own way about Wounded Knee as I have experienced such as being a veteran of the Wounded Knee takeover. I was one of the peole instrumental in the name change at the Battle of the little Big Horn and also helped organize the Chief Big Foot Memorial Ride. I was hired as a sergeant of Police when the Tribe contracted Law Enforcement from the B.I.A. and I attended the Police Acedemy in the State of South Dakota and was certified Law Enforcement Officer. I also owned and operated a Propane Gas company and several convenience stores on the Rez.

 I recieved the following from Garry as of earlier today (Monday). He indicates that he is available for Sunday, so I would like to plan on two hours of time for him to speak to us. I hope we can be respectful and generous as I suspect he will has worthy causes to discuss and important views to share.   
I suggest we plan to start our Walk with the OldOnes about 11:00 and aloow Garry twou hours from 12:00 to 2:00. This will still give us 2:00 to 4:00 to develop Thargalia more.

I realize this is a big favor to ask and I'm not sure if Garry will go for it, but I was wondering if someone could record his talk somehow either via video or tape recorder.  I won't be here Sunday as I'll be in Ohio celebrating my Grandma's 83rd birthday and I'm really interested in hearing what he has to say about Wounded Knee.  I would greatly appreciate it if someone would do this but I understand if it's not possible.  Thanks all the same.

I realize this is short notice but the opportunity happened really fast.  Please pass to all who may be interested and RSVP me, Caryn MacLuan, at carynml@verizon.net so I can make sure we have enough coffee and tea available.  If there are more than 15 or so folks, we might need to be outside so dress appropriately for the weather.  We are planning on our weekly blessing service at about 11 AM and giving Garry time to speak from about Noon untill he is done talking.

Garry Rowland, director of the Wounded Knee Visitors Center, Headsman of the Fire Lightning Tiospaye in Wounded Knee,  and Director of the Wounded Knee chapter of the American Indian Movement (AIM) will be at CedarLight Grove this coming Sunday, April 15th.  We plan to give him time to talk about the history of Wounded Knee and the private project to maintain a Native American owned and operated memorial to those who died at Wounded Knee both in the late 1800's and in the 1970's.  See some of the links below for more details.

Oh boy extra stuff .  

Hi Cat, Seriously, I dont know if we will need a whole lot of extra stuff for Sunday.  CLG's gotten real good the practice hospitality as a regular thing from what I've seen of late.  I guess a few biggish bottle of juice or tea soda or something might be nice, rather relying on the soda fund.

I got word from Garry that he now plans to arrive late Friday afternoon, so he is not in town just yet.  I will keep you posted.

Also, I'd like a general sense of the fellowship on a "press release".  One I confirm that Garry is in fact in-town and planning on Sunday at CLG, should I post a press release to the Baltimore SUN's religon notes area.  Sems like a good idea to me, but it may bring more public visibility.  Are there any vetos?

I guess I should also put this in front of the Witan.
