National Day Of Prayer

Hey folks...

Remember how I was talking a few months ago about wanting to put together a multifaith event for the National Day Of Prayer?

Well, that particular day is on the first Thursday in May.

Anyone interested in trying to make something happen? Drop a comment here. I'd like to try to have an initial organizational meeting before the end of the month.

What does one do on a national day of prayer?

The only thing I would be interested in would be a public debut.  Just to say "we're pagan and we pray too."

The point is that people come together and pray for the good of the community and the world.

No, I'm not talking about an event to say "Hi, we're pagan, we pray", but to gather people together of many different religions on a day that is typically dominated by one particular religion.

Amongst the goals of the National Day Of Prayer task force are:
(These are not the only goals, the NDPTF is a Christian organization but these are the goals that are relevant to this discussion.)

-Protect America's Constitutional Freedoms to gather, worship, pray and speak freely.
-Encourage and emphasize prayer, regardless of current issues and positions
-Respect all people, regardless of denomination or creed

In that case, I think we should have an advertised on witchvox open house at the Grove.  A little work, a little nosh, and a little prayer.

I would actually like to do this somewhere in the city, a bit more visible/centrally accessible, perhaps in mount vernon- I'm going to talk to folks from IFC about possible locations.

I don't want to make this a strictly-pagan event.

Why try to find/schedule/pay for a venue when we already have one -- Cedar Light Center?

Since neopagan prayer is our speciality, why not focus on what we do best?  We could even have an ADF public ceremony and prayer.

So you're not thinking of this as a Cedar Light activity, you're thinking of this as a whoever is interested?

I would not completely discount  the grove as a place to hold an event, but as I said, I would prefer somethign more central. My first thought is to look into the UU Church on Charles Street, or maybe somewhere on the grounds of the MICA.

Because the point is not "Cedarlight grove invites everyone to a Cedarlight ritual", but to have an event where people of many faiths/religions/traditions/what have you come together and share prayers and blessings for the community...kinda like the interfaith service at Gay Pride Week, but wthout the focus on a singular issue.

exactly. I posted here because I was on the forum and it was immediately on my mind, but I plan to look for folks interested in working on this elsewhere as well.

The idea of bringing people of different faiths together to pray to Deity, both monotheists and polytheists, I think is a good one.  Very Bahaiesque. Could we have a purpose for the prayer that would bring us together? Like a prayer for peace.  Peace is something that Christians, Jews, Muslims, Pagans, Buddhists, UU, and other could agree on.  I also think a UU church idea is a good one.  It is avenue that a lot of people of faith, who lean a tad in the progressive direction, would feel comfortable about.  Let me know what I can do to help. It is a good idea.
