Title: Trash at the Grove
Post by: Crystal on March 16, 2009, 10:22:12 AM
From now on, someone will need to make sure the trash cans are taken to the end of the driveway at the end of the day for each event at the Grove.

In addition to this, any trash put in the trashcan MUST be in a trash bag, there can be no loose trash placed in the trash cans at all.

The Grove will be supplying new metal cans to replace the plastic ones that are falling apart.

Tenants will also be required to take their own individual trash to the curb.  Cans will be labeled accordingly.

Thank you :)

This is a great time for folks to think about the packaging of the things we all bring for Rites of Caffeina and High Rites.  If we bring things in containers that we can take back home with us, we are not just decreasing the trash we deal with at the grove.  We are also helping the Earth, honoring the Kindred and all the generations who come after.
---And it saves money!---

Pack it in, carry if back out and reuse, reuse, reuse.

My 2 cents

Oddly enough, I received a bulletin from the City regarding Trash collection today.  I assume there is a copy in all our mailboxes.  It says that Trash collection services are changing, then says to watch for future announcements on those changes.  Some things of note that are mentioned in the bulletin:

1. No more than Two 32gal. cans per address
2. Cans must be made of a Durable material and have tight fitting lids.
3. Cans must be  placed  between 8pm and 6am the evening before pickup.

It goes on about not putting trash bags on the street, blocking sidewalks, alleys, etc. mostly common sense stuff.  I then went to the website and researched Baltimore City Codes just to get a bit more in-depth information.

1. No more than Two 32gal. cans per address
2. Cans must be made of a Durable material and have tight fitting lids.
I currently have one 32gal. Rubbermaid Heavy-Duty can with a locking lid to prevent wind or vermin from getting into it.  Baltimore City Codes say that a trash receptacle must be made of metal or other durable material.  I prefer the plastic as it doesn't dent, crush, go out-of-round, or become otherwise unusable if hit by a car or blown down the road.

3. Cans must be  placed  between 8pm and 6am the evening before pickup.
Once there are receptacles that are used for the Grove only, I will place them at the curb for pickup at the allowable times.

The reason I say this is because there was one last bit of information in the City's notice.
Citations of $50 and Fines up to $500 can be levied for each violation.  While I doubt that we would be likely to receive a $500 fine just for placing the Groves cans out 8hours early, why take the chance.

I will post further information as it is received.

John

I think I'd like to call and get permission for 3 bins anyway, considering our rather unique situation of 2 apartments and a church.

I am on the City's Sustainability  list and a memo just came out to me as well. Thanks for posting, I can cross that off the to-do list.  :)

The problem is in the areas where people have been putting out there trash on all days not just trash day in plastic bags.  By the time trash day comes, it is all over the place and the rats are fat and happy.

As long as the trash is in cans with lids and no sooner than the evening before, I think all is well.

More trashy news for Balitmore City residents ....

The City Council will be voting on the “1+1” plan on April 7.  Contact your councilman to give your input.  :)

In brief, it will entitle Baltimore residents to their accustomed twice per week visit from City sanitation trucks; however, one visit will be for trash and the second will be for recycling.

all City trash routes are being updated to assure that all streets in a given neighborhood have the same trash collection day. This is the first route update in over 30 years, and all routes will now include vacant lots and alleys. And, the worker schedules will change so that we will eliminate the problem of no holiday collections. The biggest change, however, is that residents will now have weekly pick-up for an unlimited amount of recyclable material.

We're okay Crystal.  Each Apartment and the Church count as an individual address, not the house as a whole.  Se we are actually entitled to put 8 cans out if we wish.

Eh, we rarely use them all, unless there's a major clean out.  And even then, most of the time we load up trucks and minivans and haul things to the various dumps/recycling centers we have access to.

Actually, there's been quite a few times I have hauled every container at the Grove out to the street on trash days, and it has nothing to do with any major clean out.  It probably doesn't get noticed because it builds gradually on a weekend.  People produce a lot more trash than they realize they do.  And if you are at the Grove on a weekend, do you really notice whether a can that was empty on Saturday is now full Sunday afternoon?

Soda cans , empty food bags, coffee cups,  pizza boxes, refuse from cars (yes, this happens), both individual and group refuse from a ritual, gardening clippings, branches, weeds, trash bags from the Grove, trash bags from the apartments, and next thing you know, I'm hauling 4+ cans to the street, after having to bag all the loose trash that was casually dropped in as people walked by.

Which is exactly why these changes are going into effect.

Soda cans are supposed to be being recycled by Grove members.  Please make sure you don't put soda cans in the trash if you are an attendee of the Grove.

And starting now, I can take yard waste to either the Warren Road facility or I can have it picked up curbside, so we can eliminate that item from the waste stream as well.

When the 1+1 goes into effect, we will have trash pick up one day and recyclables another day each week.  I don't know yet which day will be which.  As it stands now, they do trash pick up twice a week, with recycling available on Thursdays twice a month.  So, once that happens it will be much easier.

Recyclables are supposed to go into specific bins provided for that purpose.
