Title: the stone's erection
Post by: mahreen on November 08, 2007, 08:12:46 PM
No stoning on Sat, as there is already to much going on.  I will get the hole ready for the erection on Friday, and do hope to see a robust and hearty crew to help play with the stone's erection on Sunday, maybe 11ish.  This to be followed or preceeded by brief "Walk" and followed maybe 12:30 ish by a more extended Veteran's Day Blot and Ancestral Altar Stone Ceremonial wasting of perfectly good ale, stout, mead, and similar.  All welcome to push and nudge the stone into place late Sunday Morning.

Will reminds me of dumbledore. I finally sucked it up and shook down my local library for the set  of potter books and the more I read the more I think will is a straight version of him.

If you're planning a Blot, heres some bits.

First and foremost the words of Odin; from the Hávamál verse 144, line 3: Dost know how to ask, Dost know how to offer,

When a blót was to be held the folk would all come to the temple. They would bring with them everything they needed throughout the festival, including ale and livestock. The livestock, both cattle horses, were slaughtered and the blood collected into vessels. The blood was then sprinkled over the altars and the temple walls and upon the gathered folk. The flesh of the slaughtered animals was boiled in kettles and served to everyone present. Goblets were filled with ale and the ale was blessed by the host in charge of the blót.

Blessing the Ale
The blót ale is borne over the fire and then the sign of the hammer is made over it. It is difficult to ascertain the significance of the ale being borne over the fire. On the one hand it seems possible that passing the ale over the fire was a means of consecrating it. In some ways this would resemble the rite of need fire. The need fire could only be lit by a fire bow or a fire drill, it could not be lit by flint and steel. Passing the ale over the fire could then be a means of sanctifying the ale, of driving any evil influences away from it.

Toasts are then made to Odin, for victory and power to the king, then to ones personal Norse Gods, following which the folk drank toasts in memory of those who had died.

Damn, I didn't know stones could do that.    :D

If you do mange to get it up, I suppose you'll need two smaller round stones to keep it erect?

Not that it really matters, but I;ve read the first 5 pages of the first book three times, and never gotten much beyond that.

The hole is in place (hopefully the right one), and overly deep.  We can backfill a base of concrete rubble set into the clay, and cap with a layer of (salvaged) 3 inch (nom) concrete pad to define the preferred level of the bottom.  All suitable offerings and sacrifices may be included ust below this level.  Bring as you wish.  Once the stone is slid into place, additinioal concrete salvage will be added to brace in place prior to surface grading and finish (may not all be done on Sunday).

Or something like that. I dont plan on setting into wet concrete, but we could mix a couple of bags, or pack it in dry if anybody brings some.

BTW unearthed a smal speckled snake whilst staging the concrete.  I think he was curled into his wintering ball, and was not inclined to be an omen, but I am not sure on that just yet.  Snale was maybe 8-10 inches long, and 300-400 mils diameter. Generallt light cream color with brown diamond or triangular "checkerboard dow his back.  This is not one I recognize , but will try to lear more about before tomorrow.  In any case, an otherwise unmet kindred of the nature folk.

Too cool.   I'll be there for the Stone's Rising.  Should I bring any viagra?  (Not that I need it...but the stone could perhaps need all the help it can get.)

Oh Jack...

I could make a joke here, but you left that door so wide open and I'm just too proud to walk through it.

Hmmm...could be an Omen from Loki.  For the death of Baldur, Loki was chained to a rock while poisonous acid from a Snake's fangs dripped onto his body.  Loki's wife captured the liquid in a bowl to keep it from him, but did occasionally have to go and empty the bowl.  When she did, the pain was so great that Loki in his thrashing about caused the earth to shake.  Hence, earthquakes.

Not sure if this would be an auspicious omen to most, so probably not one people would want to have.  I interpret it as an excellent omen however.
